  1. The US Supreme Court on Monday upheld the use of midazolam, a controversial lethal injection drug, saying that petitioners didn’t adequately prove that it violated Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment.
  2. The decision means states can continue using midazolam in their executions.
  3. The case came about after Oklahoma botched the execution of Clayton Lockett, who appeared to groan and struggle for 43 minutes after the state injected him with lethal injection drugs.
