Hugh Jackman is an old, beaten-down mutant in Logan, the third Wolverine spinoff movie from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise and Jackman’s last turn as the mutant with adamantium claws and an adept healing factor.
Logan’s first trailer: Wolverine gets the grim, sad, Western he deserves
The film’s first trailer has arrived, providing a glimpse into the atmosphere and tone that the studio, producer Simon Kinberg, and director James Mangold are going for: Logan appears to be a moody, dusty flick that imagines Wolverine, a.k.a. Logan, and an aging Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) as the last of the X-Men.
“Charles, the world isn’t the same as it was,” Logan says in a voiceover paired with an image of Logan in a cemetery. “Mutants — they’re gone now.”
He’s then introduced to a mysterious girl named Laura Kinney — a clone of Wolverine — who he must protect from people who want to eliminate her.
The movie is a riff on the 2008 Old Man Logan comic book miniseries, which imagines Logan as an old, reclusive figure who is ravaged by guilt — he feels responsible for the death of the X-Men and the deaths of everyone close to him. He can heal every cut, bruise, broken bone, and bullet hole on his own body, but the great tragedy is that he can’t heal the mental trauma he’s suffered.
Though it isn’t a direct translation, the new trailer suggests that Logan is aiming to be something of a revenge Western in the vein of True Grit, or even something like Terminator 2, but much dustier. There’s even a hint of the zombie survival video game The Last of Us.
Jackman’s Wolverine will embark on one last mission in what looks to be an epic sendoff for the character, and a goodbye to the actor who originated the role.
Logan will hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
