Following a 52 percent vote in favor of independence, Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to step down by October after six years in leadership.
“I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months,” he said outside Downing Street today, “but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.”
Cameron had urged voters to remain in the EU, saying that a Brexit would be an act of “economic self-harm.”
In reaction to the news today, the British pound plunged to its lowest levels since 1985.
“The British people have made a choice, that not only needs to be respected, but those on the losing side of the argument — myself included — should help to make it work,” Cameron said.
