It turns out that the charges against Paul Manafort and Rick Gates weren’t the first in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. On Monday, Mueller unsealed a weeks-old document revealing that George Papadopoulos — a lower-level Trump campaign foreign policy adviser — had actually been arrested back in July. Papadopoulos eventually agreed to plead guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Russians during the campaign, apparently as part of a cooperation deal.

The document contains the rather remarkable revelation that all the way back in April 2016, Papadopoulos was told by a foreign professor with Russian government connections that the Russians had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton — in the form of “thousands of emails.” Papadopoulos was advising the Trump campaign at the time, so one major question is just who else he told about this “dirt,” if anyone.
