Former SAP Cloud Exec Price Has Landed at Oracle

From one cloud to another.

Business software giant Oracle has made another executive hire, filling out the team that will execute on its ambitious plans to attack the cloud computing market.

Re/code has confirmed that Shawn Price, the former cloud business executive at SAP, has landed at Oracle. His title is senior VP for product strategy and marketing, in the cloud unit, and he reports to CEO Mark Hurd.

Word of Price’s hiring — about which Oracle declined to comment — comes a day after the company tapped Peter S. Magnusson, a former executive with Google and Snapchat, to run development of its platform-as-a-service and infrastructure-as-a-service efforts.

Price, the former head of SAP’s cloud unit, had been pushed out of that company earlier this year as part of a wider management shakeup prompted by Bill McDermott taking over as the sole CEO of that company following the retirement of Jim Hagemann Snabe.

The move is another indicator of Oracle’s plans to aggressively attack the market for cloud applications as well as cloud infrastructure services. At the company’s OpenWorld conference last month, CTO Larry Ellison announced several new cloud products and services including a version of its Java programming language that is available to software developers as a service. Oracle’s core database was also announced as a cloud service.

Oracle has been shifting its software offerings toward the cloud in recent years and away from the old-school on-premise offerings on which it built its business as it has faced stiffer competition from companies like Salesforce.com and Workday. On a conference call last month, Hurd said Oracle is on its way to posting $2 billion in revenue from cloud sales.
