Updated: Got a New Follower? Twitter Now Makes It Easier to Follow Back.

Twitter wants its users to follow people back.

The company made an adjustment to its notification stream that includes a follow button next to the handle of the person who just followed you. It’s a subtle change, but one that Twitter hopes will encourage users to follow more people. The message: This user followed you; why don’t you return the favor?

*Update: A twitter spokesperson confirmed that this is actually a bug, and the ability to follow users from your notification timeline has been removed from the app. Too bad. We thought it sounded pretty interesting.

Previously, Twitter just showed small versions of each new follower’s avatar, and users had to visit their profiles individually in order to follow them back. Now, they don’t need to leave their timeline.

The update, which only appears to be active on mobile, is Twitter’s latest tweak intended to create more interaction among users. In another notable update from August, the company started inserting tweets into user timelines from people they didn’t follow, a way to surface new content to users that they might otherwise miss.

Twitter also added a new feature for new users last week. When users with less than a month on the service see no new content in their timelines, Twitter will push a tweet from a person they don’t follow as a way to introduce them to new users.
