Instagram Hires First COO, Facebook VP Marne Levine

Instagram has hired Marne Levine, Facebook’s VP of global public policy, as its first chief operating officer.

Levine, who worked at Facebook the past four years helping to manage its policy teams worldwide, will now focus on keeping Instagram running smoothly as the app — which already has more than 200 million users — continues to scale.

Levine will manage Instagram’s day-to-day internal operations, including things like human resources, policy and communications, according to an Instagram spokesperson. Her specific duties are still being ironed out, but she’ll also have a hand in some capacity on the moneymaking side of the business, helping to oversee things like partnerships, marketing, monetization and business operations, the spokesperson added.

Levine is the second major executive hire for Instagram in the past two months. In August, Instagram hired James Quarles to run advertising as its new global head of business. Instagram has offered ads for almost a year, but the company has been very picky about which ads and ad partners it works with. New executives like Quarles and Levine are a sign that Instagram is ready to ramp up its advertising efforts moving forward.

Like Levine, Quarles also joined Instagram after multiple years at Facebook.

Levine is also a board member for Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In organization. She will join Instagram in the next few months and report directly to Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, according to a spokesperson.
