John Cook, the editor who left Gawker Media this year to join Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media startup, may be headed back to Gawker. Vanity Fair contributor Sarah Ellison reported this morning, via Twitter, that Cook was returning to his former employer.

(Update: A person familiar with Cook’s plans confirms the move. Cook’s new job will place him in charge of investigative reporting at Gawker Media’s eight sites.)
“I’m not going to say anything about it,” Cook said when asked for comment via phone, though he did add that he is still currently employed at First Look. “Right now, yes. I’m about to go to the office.”
Cook’s move is the second high-profile departure from First Look. Last month, writer Matt Taibbi left the company, prompting a lengthy report from First Look’s other writers and editors — including Cook — that described a large rift between Omidyar and his employees.
