Microsoft said Thursday that it is buying HockeyApp, a service for mobile developers to analyze crashes and test their software.

It’s the latest move by the big mobile companies to acquire their own services for crash analytics and beta testing.

HockeyApp works with iOS, Android and Windows Phone, and Microsoft plans to integrate it into Visual Studio, its suite of tools for software creation. In addition to crash analytics, HockeyApp can be used to manage beta testing efforts.
Tools for testing apps have become a hot commodity. Apple earlier this year bought Burstly, maker of the popular TestFlight beta testing service.
Microsoft did not disclose the financial terms of its deal for HockeyApp, which is based in Stuttgart, Germany.
“We saw the potential of the added abilities and resources of Microsoft to make our platform even better,” HockeyApp’s team said in a blog post. “It may sound cliché, but it really does feel like a match made in heaven.”
The company said it plans to continue working on its current services and will update folks in the coming months on its integration with Microsoft.
“Your HockeyApp apps and accounts will continue to work and the team has not stopped working on advancing the platform,” the company said.
Sadly, there appear to be no plans to create an actual hockey app.
