Americans spent $15.39 billion on gaming content in 2013, according to new numbers out today from the NPD Group. Digital game purchases totaled $7.22 billion, followed by retail at $6.34 billion and retail sales of used or rental games at $1.83 billion. New retail sales dropped 11 percent year over year, but the growth of digital game sales for consoles, PCs, handhelds and mobile devices offset the drop for a one percent overall increase. NPD previously reported that gaming hardware sales increased last year from $4.04 billion to $4.26 billion in 2013.
