This week brought us three, shiny new trailers featuring the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carrell. All three are appearing in separate films, and perhaps by coincidence, there seems to be a running theme of the three actors not playing the characters we’re used to seeing.
Trailers: Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell get weird

McCarthy, better known for playing burpy jesters like she did in Bridesmaids and The Heat, is playing a mom in St. Vincent. But from the trailer, it also looks like she’s playing a responsible mom. The hijinks of the film are left to bad baby-sitter Bill Murray and Naomi Watts, who is giving us some gaudy Eastern European realness:
Like McCarthy, Steve Carrell and Channing Tatum are both shucking their comedic shells, but their new project is a bit darker. They’re starring in Foxcatcher, a biographical story about Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz, his brother Dave Schultz, and John Eleuthere du Pont, the schizophrenic multimillionaire who murdered Dave. Word about the film (and especially the performances) was strong coming out of the Cannes Film Festival, and the movie looks and feels like a wrestling version of Black Swan:
And finally, we have Horrible Bosses 2 featuring a Jennifer Aniston who is trying very hard to reprise a character that it nothing like the Jennifer Aniston we know:
