Dropbox Hires Lookout CMO for Marketing VP Slot

Julie Herendeen will report to COO Dennis Woodside.

Cloud storage giant Dropbox has just poached the chief marketing officer of wireless security company Lookout as its next VP for marketing.

A Dropbox spokeswoman just confirmed to Re/code that it has tapped Julie Herendeen to take over marketing for the fast-growing cloud storage and sharing service. Her start date will be in late September or early October, and she will report up to Dennis Woodside, Dropbox’s COO who’s also the former CEO of Motorola.

Herendeen (pictured above) has been CMO at Lookout since 2010, and also sits on the board of directors at the sports footwear company Topo Athletic. She joined Lookout at about the same time it raised an $11 million Series B from Accel Partners. It has since gone on to bigger things, having earlier this month raised a huge $150 million round led by the investment firm T. Rowe Price.

Her role at Dropbox will include running demand generation and customer marketing, brand management and development, product marketing and customer insights. When asked about the hiring — we heard about this pretty early — Dropbox issued a statement from Woodside: “Julie is an exceptional leader with a remarkable track record in building great teams and executing innovative marketing strategies at both hyper-growth startups and global corporations. We’re thrilled to add her talent and vision to the Dropbox team as we continue to scale our business globally.”

Before Lookout, Herendeen clocked five years at Internet giant Yahoo, where she was VP for network products and advertising solutions. She has also worked at Shutterfly, Netscape and Apple.

The move follows another change among Dropbox’s executive ranks. Last week, Re/code reported that head designer Soleio is leaving the company. The same day, Dropbox added former Priceline CFO Bob Mylod to its board of directors.

Lookout just sent a statement, too: “Julie Herendeen was one of Lookout’s earliest employees. She’s had a direct impact in growing the Lookout user base from tens of thousands of users to tens of millions and was instrumental in building Lookout’s brand into what it is today. As a powerhouse in the marketing industry, Julie built a world-class team at Lookout, which is a testament to her many accomplishments. We fully expect her to do big things at Dropbox. We wish Julie the best in her next role and thank her for the legacy she’s left at Lookout.”
