One Day In, iOS 8 Adoption Trails Pace of iOS 7, iOS 6

One possible reason is the large size of the download file.

There were certainly plenty of people downloading iOS 8 in the past day, but several third parties said Thursday the adoption of the new operating system appears to be less than what was seen for iOS 7 during its first 24 hours of availability.

One firm, Chitika, says iOS 8 adoption in the U.S. and Canada appears to be slower than that seen during the first day of availability for both iOS 7 and iOS 6.

“While reviews of the new OS version have been generally positive, initial adoption of iOS 8 has been remarkably more tepid than the last two iOS iterations — iOS 7 and iOS 6,” Chitika said in a report being released later on Thursday.

Its data shows iOS 8 adoption at about 7.3 percent, compared to 14.8 percent for iOS 6 and 18.2 percent for iOS 7 in each of their first days.

Other firms also found iOS 8 adoption slower than iOS 7, albeit somewhat less dramatically.

“An early look at the data show that consumers are adopting iOS 8 at a much slower pace than iOS 7,” Tapjoy said in a blog post.

One possible reason is the large size of the download file.

Interestingly, Tapjoy said iPod touch users were among the quickest adopters of the new software, which is something of a surprise, given that they lack the built-in cellular connection found on iPhones and some iPads.

Mixpanel also showed iOS 8 adoption trailing that of last year’s iOS 7 release.

Apple made iOS 8 available starting Wednesday, two days before the iOS 8-equipped iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hit the market. Among the features that iOS 8 brings to existing devices are support for third-party keyboards, interactive notifications, support for widgets and new camera features.
