Amazon beat out one of its chief competitors, Google, for a new alternative to the “.com” top-level domain called “.buy.” Amazon won with a bid of $4.58 million for the address, part of the Internet governing body ICANN’s initiative to create alternatives to .com. I’ve reached out to Amazon to see if the company plans to offer second-level domains, like iPads.buy, to its merchants, or whether it will keep the .buy ecosystem closed off as a defensive measure.
