- The endorsement in the open seat contest is notable because it comes quite early. It therefore appears aimed both at winning Harris support from progressives — and at deterring other potential challengers from entering the race.
- Other potential candidates include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, and Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
- Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, widely viewed to be Harris’ most formidable potential rival, has announced that he won’t run for Senate — likely because he plans to run for governor instead, in 2018.
