Paris Attacks to Overshadow Tonight’s Democratic Presidential Debate

CBS scrambled to rework its plan for tonight’s meeting in Iowa.

Issues related to the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris Friday night will dominate Saturday night’s debate among the three Democratic candidates running for president.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Martin O’Malley, the former governor of Maryland, will meet in a debate tonight from Des Moines, Iowa, that is being hosted by CBS News. As the New York Times reported earlier today, the network reworked its debate plan late Friday as news of the attacks broke.

As a result, you can expect the wider foreign policy and national security implications of the attacks to play a more prominent role in the questions. Expect Clinton in particular to be put on the defensive. President Obama has generally tended to downplay the importance of the Islamic State, the organization that is being blamed for the attacks, and which has claimed responsibility for them. President Obama’s comment in an interview Friday hours before the attacks that “we have contained” ISIS won’t help her.

The debate will air on CBS TV affiliates at 9 pm ET. It will also stream on the CBS News website and via its apps on iOS and Android phones and tablets, AppleTV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and the XBox One.
