‘Re/code Decode’: Jet.com CEO Marc Lore Explains Why Fighting Amazon Isn’t a Stupid Idea

Jet.com CEO Marc Lore doesn’t need to beat Amazon. He’d be pretty happy with second place.

“There’s plenty of room for more than one player,” Lore said on the latest episode of “Re/code Decode.” “The market is massive.”

How massive? Lore said he expects e-commerce in the U.S. to grow from $300 billion to $1 trillion in the next 10 years.

He also told Re/code’s Senior Commerce Editor Jason Del Rey that spending aggressively on marketing will be crucial to Jet’s future. The more the company grows its online-shopping user base, the faster it can turn the upfront overhead costs of launching a wannabe-commerce giant into a fraction of its business.

“It’s costing us $50 to get a customer, and the lifetime profit range is well north of that, even at the bottom of that range,” Lore said.
