Twitter’s Head of Design, Mike Davidson, Is Leaving

Twitter loses another key veteran.

Marisa Allegra Williams (@marisa) for Twitter, Inc.

Twitter is losing another key executive: Vice President of Design Mike Davidson, who has been running the design team at Twitter since joining the company back in 2012.

Davidson announced his departure on Twitter Monday, but won’t actually be leaving until February. As head of design, Davidson’s fingerprints were on most of Twitter’s product launches over the past three years, including its new multimedia feature Moments, which was launched in October. Sources say he’s likely headed back to Seattle, where he was living before joining Twitter.

A spokesperson confirmed Davidson’s departure and said that Twitter does not yet have a replacement.

It’s unclear why Davidson is leaving. He has been at Twitter three years and seen a lot of turnover in that time, so it may just be time for something new. It’s also a tough departure to swallow for the company, which is still trying to solidify its executive team under new/old CEO Jack Dorsey (not to mention its board of directors.) Dorsey, of course, is a well-known product and design guy himself; a few notable product and design employees have left since he came back to Twitter as interim CEO earlier this summer.

Twitter is still looking for a VP of comms (who would report to Vijaya Gadde), a head of corporate development, a chief marketing office and now a design leader, too.
