“Star Wars” took in $49.3 million in the U.S. on Friday, double the prior record set by “Sherlock Holmes” in 2009.

Disney/YouTube screen grab

The latest “Star Wars” film is showing that the force remains strong, especially when it comes to box office returns.

After earlier setting records for debut day and weekend, “Star Wars” has now trounced the previous record for Christmas Day revenue as well.

Update: “Star Wars” is also the fastest film to generate $1 billion globally, hitting that point in just 12 days.

According to a Variety report citing Rentrak, “Star Wars” took in $49.3 million in the U.S. on Friday. That was double the prior Christmas record (“Sherlock Holmes” took in $24.6 million back in 2009).

The film is also expected to set new records for a second weekend of release, highest 10-day total and fastest film to top $500 million, Variety said.

If you haven’t yet seen it, you won’t get any spoilers from us. But, here’s the official trailer:
