T-Mobile Revenue Beats Estimates as Discounts Lure Customers

The No. 4 U.S. wireless operator added more than two million subscribers in the fourth quarter.

T-Mobile’s quarterly profit and revenue handily beat market estimates as aggressive discounts helped the No. 4 U.S. wireless operator add more than two million subscribers.

The carrier, two-thirds of which is owned by Deutsche Telekom, has turned around years of subscriber losses with discount offers in recent quarters.

T-Mobile’s “Data Stash” plan allows customers to retain unused data in their next billing cycle.

It added a net 2.1 million customers in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31. Revenue jumped 19.4 percent to $8.15 billion.

Average revenue fell to $48.26 per branded postpaid phone user as more customers opted for lower-priced plans.

T-Mobile reported net income of $101 million, or 12 cents per share, compared with a loss of $20 million, or three cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected a profit of five cents per share on revenue of $7.88 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company said it was aiming to add 2.2 million-3.2 million branded postpaid net customers in 2015.
