Facebook Expands Its Gender Options for Users -- Again

Facebook adds “custom” gender option for users who want to fill it out on their own.

Facebook updated its gender identification settings once again on Thursday, adding a “custom” option to the list of pre-set gender designations users can select from.

The move allows users to more accurately indicate their gender in case they don’t identify with one of the menu options.

Facebook expanded its list of gender designations in February to include 50 different pre-set identities; on Thursday, it said it collaborated with a group of LGBT advocacy organizations to decide on the new setup.

Users can also share their custom identity with specific groups on Facebook, which may make them more comfortable with sharing.

“We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way,” Facebook wrote in a post. You can read the whole statement below.
