With TransAsia flight 235 crashing in Taiwan this week, after a year of several horrifying accidents, it may seem like plane crashes are becoming more frequent. But while the images of the wreckage tend to stick in our minds and amplify our visceral fear of heights, flying has actually become much safer over recent decades.
