Rory Read, the former CEO of chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices and former executive with Lenovo and IBM, is close to a deal to join Dell, the privately-held computing company, according to multiple sources briefed on the hiring, which could be announced as early as Monday.

It wasn’t clear as of Friday precisely what Read’s title and role will be at Dell, though sources consistently described it as a “C-Level” position, likely in the Enterprise Group, where he would be reporting to chief commercial officer Marius Haas. Update: Bloomberg moved a story on this late Friday, saying Read’s title will be COO and president for global commercial sales.
Read was pushed out by AMD’s board suddenly in October and replaced by its then-COO Lisa Su, who is now its CEO. He joined AMD in 2011 as its CEO after an eight-month search following the boardroom resignation of its previous CEO Dirk Meyer earlier that year. Read spent most of his three years on a wide restructuring and reorganization of the chipmaker, which is a perennial also-ran to Intel in the market for PC microprocessors and graphics chips as well as chips that go into servers.
Before AMD, Read led the American unit of China-based PC giant Lenovo, and is credited with boosting its sales and profitability in 2007. He joined Lenovo by way of IBM, where he worked for 23 years, mostly in its PC division. Big Blue sold that unit to Lenovo for $1.75 billion in 2005.
On Monday Dell will confirm that it has hired Paul Perez, a former Cisco Systems exec who will be CTO of the Enterprise Group, also reporting up to Haas. Perez, who had been a VP and general manager for Cisco’s Unified Computing System or UCS products, which brings in about $3 billion in annual revenue. Network World first reported his departure from Cisco; CRN first reported that he was on his way to a job at Dell.
