Here’s What It’s Like to Shop Using Facebook’s New Buy Button

Facebook has been testing new e-commerce features, just like its social media competitor, Twitter.

Jason Del Rey
Jason Del Rey has been a business journalist for 15 years and has covered Amazon, Walmart, and the e-commerce industry for the last decade. He was a senior correspondent at Vox.

In July, Facebook announced plans to begin testing a “Buy” button that businesses could include on Facebook posts and Facebook ads to let people shop for stuff without leaving the social network. But I had never come across the new shopping feature since then, and I visit Facebook just about every day.

That was the case until Tuesday, when a sponsored post from a shoe brand called Inkkas showed up in my News Feed. And, looky there … a “Buy” button!

Here’s what the ad looked like. It features the style name and price for various sneakers and a button that allows you to scroll through a few more choices that aren’t visible in the initial ad.

Okay, so I’ve decided on a pair and clicked on the Buy button for the right one. Next, the window that pops open displays four different views of the sneaker to cycle through. There are also some details about the product (“Vegan Shoes”) and information about shipping speed and the return policy.

After selecting shoe size and quantity and pressing the Buy button, a few more entry fields pop up: Shipping, contact info and payment method. The $9 shipping fee does hurt a bit, but my heart is saying yes even though my mind is saying no. I click the big, blue “Place Order” button and eagerly await my Grey Wolf Slant Vegan Shoes.

Thanks, Facebook.
