Re/actions: Disco Dog, the Pinnacle of Wearable Technology

They say dogs and their owners often look alike. But in tech-savvy areas, our canine friends often fall behind in this resemblance because they lack a certain, as the French say, douchiness.

Well, no longer.

The Disco Dog, which promises to make your mutt look like an LMFAO reject, was successfully funded this week on Kickstarter to the tune of $22,757 from 171 backers. If that’s not a perfect example of why crowdfunding is the wave of the future, I don’t know what is.

The only downside to this obviously necessary piece of technology: Dogs are partly colorblind, so they can’t fully appreciate how ballin’ (again, as the French say) they look.

I figured my Re/code colleagues might have a bone to pick with the Disco Dog. Here’s what they had to say:

Because the $55 billion we spend on useless crap for our pets isn’t quite enough.

If I’m going to be brutally honest, I could not own enough of these. I would adopt more dogs just so I could walk full sentences.

It was the second or third day of South By Southwest. There was a “pet tech” thing going on, and I decided to go. I hated my time there. It was crowded with hundreds of people grabbing puppies, taking pictures with them, and then putting them back down, even though they were there to be adopted. At the same event, I got a flyer for the Disco Dog, and I thought, this is dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.

The people who backed it on Kickstarter are going to have some great parties.
