Bryan Cranston skewers same-sex marriage bans: “Let’s end this silliness”

Bryan Cranston, the actor known for his role as Walter White in Breaking Bad, perfectly captured the sentiment of many LGBT advocates last week when he said opposition to same-sex marriage rights needs to end.

“I’ve been a big supporter of gay rights for forever, and I think it’s absurd that there’s still an issue about marriage. I mean, I think it’s insulting also to the gay community to have to constantly bring this up again and again. There are far more important issues to deal with,” Cranston told Claire Pires of the LGBT rights group GLAAD. “Let’s end this silliness, accept everyone for who they are and what they are, and embrace that and move on.”

Cranston’s perspective — that marriage equality should be “a given” — speaks to the anxiety and impatience many LGBT rights supporters feel in the runup to a Supreme Court ruling later this year over whether states should be allowed to ban same-sex marriage. With same-sex marriage legal in 37 states and surveys showing marriage equality has majority support in the US, LGBT advocates by and large feel it’s time to put this issue to rest and move on to combating other problems facing the country and world.
