Xiaomi Opens U.S. Online Store Selling Accessories, Not Phones

Fast-growing Chinese phone maker Xiaomi officially opened its U.S. online store Tuesday, though it is selling only a small selection of accessories rather than the company’s flagship smartphones.

Products on the site include a $79 pair of over-ear headphones, a $15 fitness-tracking band and a pair of power packs. The accessories all work with both iOS and Android devices.

Xiaomi also started selling accessories in the U.K., France and Germany, according to a Facebook post.

The Chinese phone maker said in February that it hoped to start selling accessories more broadly, but added it had no current plans to bring its phones to the U.S.

Another thing that has yet to make it to the U.S. site are the company’s signature stuffed bunnies. The company has sold millions of the creatures — dressed in various outfits — in China.

As for where Xiaomi will go next to sell actual phones, Brazil is already in the works for this year. Other possibilities include Russia, as well as the Middle East and other Asian and Latin American markets, executives said.

In China, Xiaomi has expanded beyond phones, offering products including an air purifier and an interest-bearing mobile wallet. The company’s business model is to sell its core devices for roughly cost and eventually make money on services.

Update: Giving Americans a taste of how the company’s flash sale model works in China, Xiaomi is now out of stock on all the accessories it had in its U.S. store.
