Jack Dorsey, New Twitter Interim CEO, Will Remain Square’s CEO

“I am grateful for the talented team at Square, which I will continue to lead,” Dorsey said.

Jack Dorsey is back as Twitter CEO on an interim basis, but he’ll continue to keep his chief executive role at his payments company Square, too.

“I am grateful for the talented team at Square, which I will continue to lead,” Dorsey said in a press release announcing Dick Costolo’s resignation as Twitter CEO and Dorsey’s appointment. “We have built a very strong company from top to bottom, and I am as committed as ever to its continued success.”

A Square spokesman declined to comment other than referring me to Dorsey’s quote.

It’s not yet clear whether Twitter would consider selecting Dorsey as permanent CEO nor whether he would want that role. Dorsey, who is also Twitter’s chairman, is not on the committee charged with finding a permanent CEO.

Square does indeed have a deep bench — with executives who have held key roles at Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon. But it’s still extremely rare for someone to hold two CEO roles at the same time.

If Dorsey’s role at Twitter is indeed temporary, this event will become nothing more than a blip in Square’s history other than giving him a taste of running a public company — something he aspires to someday do with Square. But in the event the Twitter position becomes permanent, there will be a whole lot more questions inside and outside of Square.
