Xiaomi said late Wednesday that it sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of the year, a lofty number but one that could make it tough for the company to reach its goal of selling 100 million smartphones for 2015.

The Chinese phone maker sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of the year, a bit short of its 2015 target.

A Xiaomi representative was not immediately available for comment on whether the company still believes its yearly goal is within reach, but in a statement, CEO Lei Jun praised the company’s results amid a tougher environment in its home market.
“Even with the China smartphone market slowing down, we did a stellar job of posting a 33 percent growth on last year’s numbers,” Lei said. “It can be said that we outperformed the market and produced an excellent report card.”
Last year the company sold 61 million phones, up 227 percent from the prior year.
The company also touted several recent hires and the fact that six of its models have now sold more than 10 million units each.
Xiaomi this week began taking phone orders in Brazil, its first market outside of Asia. The company has also started selling accessories — but not phones — in the U.S. and Europe.
Update, 11:01 pm PT: A Xiaomi representative told Re/code that the company’s target “is to sell 80-100 million phones this year, so the plan is 80 million.”
