Recode Daily: Tesla and Panasonic will partner on solar panels if the SolarCity acquisition goes through

Tesla and Panasonic will collaborate to build solar panels at a new Buffalo, N.Y., facility if Tesla’s acquisition of SolarCity is approved by shareholders on Nov. 17. The components would work with the Powerwall and Powerpack, Tesla’s energy storage products. Possibly related: Elon Musk’s mysterious Tesla product announcement, originally teased for today, has been pushed to Wednesday. — [The Verge]

Meanwhile, Germany has asked Tesla to stop using the term “Autopilot” for its driver-assistance system in its advertising because it might give drivers the idea that they don’t have to pay attention to the road. — [Reuters]

Billionaire investor Peter Thiel, Silicon Valley’s most prominent political contrarian, is contributing $1.25 million to Donald Trump’s campaign. Thiel remains an outlier among tech donors, but Sam Altman, president of startup incubator Y Combinator, where Thiel is a “part-time partner,” defended his right to an unpopular viewpoint. — [Recode]

Intel reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday, and the results may offer some insight into the growth of cloud computing services. Intel is counting on increased demand for its server chips in data centers as the PC market continues to shrink. — [Wall Street Journal]
