Here’s What Cosmo Editor Joanna Coles Has to Say About Nudity, Porn and Sex Ed (Video)

“Weird violent sex -- well, I love talking about that.”

Asa Mathat for Vox Media

Cosmopolitan Editor Joanna Coles runs a magazine that has long been known for its frank approach to sex.

Onstage at the Code/Media conference at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel in Dana Point, Calif., the British-born editor was characteristically upfront about the topic, as well, in her conversation with Re/code Executive Editor Kara Swisher.

Here are some of the sex-related highlights:

On Cosmo’s target audience: “We aim at millennials, but also people who are getting back out there again after a marriage or divorce. It’s a different world of dating out there, anxiety about having sex with new people. We see a young audience off on the adventures of their lives, then another audience taking off again.”

On potential sex positions for the magazine: “Weird violent sex — well, I love talking about that. … There should be a Cosmo sex position called ‘The Swisher.’”

On slipping more “serious” content into Cosmo: “Sometimes we sneak a thing about Antonin Scalia’s death. … Scalia would have preferred that many [women] never do have orgasms.”

On virtual reality and porn: “I’m sure Cosmo will get involved with virtual reality at some point. I’m fascinated by the intersection of porn and VR. … It’s a great Cosmo story — how do you pry [a VR headset] off your boyfriend’s head?”

On porn: “Thirty percent of Internet [time] is spent on porn. And I find it an incredibly interesting statistic. Why are we not having a conversation on the impact it’s having on culture.”

On sex education: “Think about when your default learning situation about sex comes from the Internet. We get letters asking about how ‘he wants to come on my face.’”
