Code Conference starts today: Here’s what to expect

Code, our annual executive conference, kicks off today in Southern California. We’ll be covering the event live all week here on Recode, including — new this year — livestreaming some of our biggest interviews via Facebook Live.

The show kicks off this evening with three interviews:

  • Ford CEO Mark Fields will explain why he’s not running the next BlackBerry, as companies like Apple, Google, Uber and Tesla promise to change the automotive landscape.
  • Susan Desmond-Hellmann, head of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will talk about the organization’s latest efforts.
  • Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will conclude the evening with a rare public interview, which we expect will cover topics including commerce, media and rockets. We’ll be live blogging Bezos’s session starting at 6 pm PT (9 pm ET) and will be livestreaming the interview via Facebook Live.

And that’s just tonight. This week’s guests also include Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, Bill and Melinda Gates, Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. And there’s a last-minute addition: Gawker CEO Nick Denton, who is fighting a series of potentially crippling lawsuits funded by Facebook board member Peter Thiel.
