Twitter still claims it’s much bigger than its user base

Twitter still claims it’s much bigger than its monthly active users.

About 1.6 billion unique visitors per month see tweets on third-party properties like TV and other digital media, Twitter CFO and COO Anthony Noto said at the Code Conference at the Terranea Resort in California.

Twitter, which isn’t growing nearly as quickly as Wall Street would like, has had five quarters of net-positive user growth. But Twitter’s user base, at 328 million monthly, is still far lower than that of competing social media companies or even television.

Still, Twitter has long argued that its impact extends well beyond how many people log in every month. Tweets are public and embeddable, so they end up in lots of places that are not Twitter or Twitter’s app.

The question is whether or not Twitter can turn these 1.6 billion “visitors” into actual ad revenue. So far, that hasn’t been the case.
