James Murdoch is coming to the Code Conference

He’s CEO of 21st Century Fox, for now. What’s next?

Peter Kafka covered media and technology, and their intersection, at Vox. Many of his stories can be found in his Kafka on Media newsletter, and he also hosts the Recode Media podcast.

James Murdoch and his brother were supposed to end up running one of the world’s most powerful media companies.

Now those plans are up in the air: The Murdoch family wants to sell much of the family business to Disney, and it’s unclear if James, currently the CEO of 21st Century Fox, would end up working for the new owners.

That’s a surprising turn of events, one that says a lot about the state of the media business in 2018 — and about the technology companies that are upending that business.

So what does James Murdoch do next? And what becomes of the rest of the Murdoch empire? We’ll ask him these questions — and many more — at the Code Conference, where he will join CEOs from the most important media and tech companies, including:

  • Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber
  • Brian Chesky, Airbnb
  • Randall Stephenson, AT&T
  • Katrina Lake, Stitch Fix

Kara Swisher and I will have more fascinating speakers to tell you about between now and Code’s kickoff — May 29, at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
