“Our Great Larry Kudlow, who has been working so hard on trade and the economy, has just suffered a heart attack,” the president (or one of his aides) tweeted shortly ahead of his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center.”
Kudlow is “doing fine,” his wife, Judith Kudlow, told the Washington Post. She added that the doctors at Reed “are fabulous.”
The White House later released a statement saying Kudlow was in “good condition” after experiencing “what his doctors say was a very mild heart attack.”
Kudlow, 70, joined the Trump administration this spring, following the departure of Gary Cohn. Kudlow came to the White House from cable news, where he was a fixture on CNBC. He previously worked as an economist Wall Street and in the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan administration.
Kudlow has been in the public eye in recent days, promoting Trump’s trade policies and ardently defending the president following his defiant stance at the G7 summit.
Kudlow had seemed an odd surrogate to sell Trump’s protectionist economic policies. He was known to be an extreme supply-sider, in favor of tax cuts and free trade. He’d been somewhat critical of Trump’s tariff proposals before joining the White House. But as Vox’s Dylan Matthews has written, Kudlow has managed to be “ideologically flexible” while at Trump’s side.
