New trailers: Fast & Furious 8 puts the rest of this week’s trailers to shame

The runners-up include Amy Schumer’s new raunch-com, Harry Styles’s feature film debut, and Despicable Me 3.

The trailer for The Fate of the Furious, a.k.a. Fast & Furious 8, was released this week, and nothing else really matters aside from that magical pun.

Cars are blown up. A Lamborghini gets riddled with bullets. Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto goes rogue. Charlize Theron plays a dastardly villain. And all kinds of other ridiculousness ensues, leading to the trailer breaking a viewing record by garnering more than 139 million views in its first 24 hours.

I, for one, am glad this colossal boondoggle of a film is on the horizon.

But it isn’t the only movie that released a new trailer this week. Below, get a look at Harry Styles’s dark Dunkirk debut, the Amy Schumer raunch-com Snatched, and a bizarre animated flick called The Boss Baby, among others:

The Boss Baby (March 31, 2017)

Few movies are as puzzling at first glance as The Boss Baby, a story about a newborn with the ability to talk (in the voice of Alec Baldwin) and a grand plan to eliminate puppies because he believes baby dogs compete for love that would otherwise go to baby humans. Since when is love finite? What happened to this baby during his short life thus far that he does not feel loved? Where do kittens factor in? I have so many dark questions.

Snatched (May 12, 2017)

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn star in Snatched, a movie about a mother and daughter who are kidnapped while on vacation in South America. Your level of enthusiasm for such a film may vary depending on how much you enjoy jokes about whale semen and Schumer being too fat to be sold into sex trafficking. But it looks … okay?

Despicable Me 3 (June 30, 2017)

The strangest part of the Despicable Me 3 trailer is the deafening lack of Minions. Gru is in it. The new villain — a man with an ’80s aesthetic and a penchant for bubblegum and Rubik’s cubes — is in it. But the googly-eyed yellow creatures are basically an afterthought, a weird move considering the Despicable Me franchise is built around them.

Dunkirk (July 21, 2017)

Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan, does not have this week’s happiest trailer. The film’s premise is pretty straightforward: It’s about the titular World War II battle, and the trailer shows Allied forces on the French beach, surrounded by German soldiers. Death, destruction, horror, and the feature film debut of One Direction singer Harry Styles all follow.
