The very first trailer for Marvel’s Captain Marvel has arrived, featuring our first look at Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, the cosmic space commander and the Avengers’ last hope against Thanos.

Our first look at Brie Larson as Carol Danvers promises aliens, origin stories, and ‘90s jokes.
The trailer finds an intrigued Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) meeting Carol for the first time — after she’s fallen to Earth and smashed through the ceiling of a Blockbuster video store (a fun way to remind us that the film is set in the ’90s).
Amid confusing flashbacks of her life growing up on Earth, memories she’s not sure are real, she tells him she doubts her own origin story. The film promises to unpack the secret of her past and how it relates to her future as one of earth’s mightiest heroes. Oh, and we also see her punch an old lady on the subway, which is a lot more awesome than it sounds.
This trailer is the first we’ve heard of Captain Marvel since Infinity War’s post-credits scene, which featured a Hail Mary call to the character by Fury, who manages to fire off one last message on a communications device before he vaporizes (thanks to Thanos).
The star-shaped logo with the stripes that’s sent to Fury’s device in response corresponds to the star-shaped logo and stripes on Captain Marvel’s uniform. That’s actually part of a 2012 uniform redesign, which was part of a bigger overhaul of the character that turned her into a leader and one of the Avengers best equipped to deal with cosmic forces.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel’s story takes place independent of the events in Infinity War. Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s and follows Danvers, an Air Force pilot, as she becomes the titular hero and finds herself in an intergalactic war along the way.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
