Photos: FBI images of 9/11 Pentagon terrorist attack

Correction: An earlier version of this post stated that the photos had not been released before. In fact, the images have been available since September 2011 and were rereleased Friday after it was brought to the agency’s attention that there had been a problem with the link to the images since December.

The FBI has rereleased 27 photos of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

The Pentagon attack was one of three coordinated terrorist attacks that day — 189 people died at the Pentagon alone. American Airlines Flight 77 was traveling from Dulles, Virginia, to Los Angeles on the morning of September 11, 2001, when it was hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists. At 9:37 am ET, the Boeing 757 plane struck the west wall of the Pentagon traveling at approximately 530 miles per hour. All 64 people on board were killed, along with 125 people inside the Pentagon (70 civilians and 55 military service members); 106 people were injured.

The photos capture wreckage and debris, the building’s ravaged and burning exterior, and the first responders who arrived on the scene in the aftermath.

Below are nine of the most haunting photos from that horrific day, now available again:
